Rahman was 20 years old and a young father when he first stepped into a boxing gym and promptly "fell in love with it". Two years after he first laced on a pair of gloves, Rahman beat former world champion Trevor Berbick.
Beating Lewis in South Africa in April 2001 was his undoubted highlight, Rahman said. He was a "massive" 20-1 underdog, but knocked out the over-confident English champion with a devastating right-hander near the end of the fifth round. It was, then, only the second loss in Lewis' career - seven years after his first.
He surrendered his title when he lost to Lewis in a court-ordered rematch in Las Vegas in November 2001, the Briton knocking out Rahman in the fourth round.
However, Rahman regained the World Boxing Council (WBC) world title in 2005 after reigning champion Vitali Klitschko had to retire due to injury. The WBC awarded Rahman the crown as the No 1 contender.
