It was during his time in the U.S Army that Mercer discovered boxing. He won Olympic Gold at Heavyweight during the Soul Olympics in 1988. He became WBO Champion with a stoppage win over Francesco Damiani. Sucessfully efended against Tommy Morrison with a devasting knockout of the Rocky V star.
